Once you reach the deliberation stage, they randomly pull out two (numbers may vary) jurors from your group and those chosen go home and the trial is done for them - no verdict decision for them. We were allowed phones when we were in our area, but had to hand in our phones each and every time we had to go into the court room. If you’re a smoker, you could go to an alley or courtyard (with someone supervising) but generally, we weren’t meant to leave our area at all, and definitely not allowed to speak to anyone else. The first day we were allowed to go out for lunch but the remaining days, we had to stay in and got lunch catered in. You and your fellow jurors will more or less be stuck in this area when not in the court room itself. They take you to an area that only you and your person (i forget their job title but they’re your go between you and the court) have access to. If selected, you make an oath or affirmation, and the the trial pretty much starts from there (once all jurors have been selected). Both sides have choice on whether they want you on the jury or not, but they only have 3 opportunities to reject you without any reason.
You make your way to the area and you have to take off your mask, state your occupation, do this little runway walk, and then get a brand new mask and sanitise. Then they ask for those wanting to be excused to come forward to the stand and state why, which the judge will decide whether or not to excuse you.Īfter that, they randomly select jury numbers for the jury itself. Once in the empanelment room, you’re provided with general details of the case (nature of the case, location, assortment of names of potential people involved) so you can determine if you have any personal involvement or attachment to the case that can excuse you. They told us that if you didn’t get selected for the jury, you’d get to go straight home instead of back to the pool waiting room like pre-covid. For my service, my entire pool got selected for empanelment at the Supreme Court as it was post-covid times so the pool selection was smaller anyway. Pre-covid, your pool could have heaps of people and you’d just sit there and wait until they call your number to go through to the empanelment process. Then you go to the supervisor and officially get marked off and handed your jury number and you go to your assigned seating. After initially checking your details, they make you remove your current mask and take a new one and sanitise hands etc. They direct you to a room where your pool group waits.
